Raw Steel to Aged Patina @CADAR

For CADAR’s new Madison Avenue flagship, we partnered with Gilbert Displays in fabricating and finishing a series of custom steel display cylinders using a decorative rust coating technique. Each piece began as raw steel, formed into cylindrical structures and prepared with a specialty primer to control the oxidation process. An iron-based coating was then applied, followed by a rust activator to develop a natural, weathered patina across the surface.

The finish builds organically, creating subtle shifts in tone, texture, and movement that can’t be replicated with paint alone. Once the desired effect was achieved, each piece was sealed to stabilize the surface and prevent further oxidation. Working with Gilbert Displays, the pieces were installed on-site with careful attention to placement and fit. Keeping everything aligned from fabrication through install helped ensure the finish translated exactly as intended in the space.

We wanted to create a strong foundation for CADAR’s pieces, allowing the craftsmanship of the jewelry to stand out. The final result is a rich, aged finish that adds depth and warmth to the space, grounding the displays while allowing the jewelry to remain the focal point.
